55 number plate recognition CCTV cameras planned in Belagavi
The city police commissioner’s office has floated tenders for advanced-quality CCTV cameras with number plate recognition technology for a better vigil on law and order and traffic management.
The CCTV cameras will be equipped with towers, transmitters, backup support,
servers, etc. These cameras can focus on the number plates of vehicles and capture
photos and videos of these.
Automatic number plate recognition is a technique that reads vehicle number plates in real-time using advanced image processing and optical character recognition on video streams/images.
Initially, the city police commissioner's office planned to deploy 55 such
cameras at key and important locations throughout the city. If all goes as
planned, these cameras will be operational within the next three weeks.
“The decision has been taken, keeping public safety in the mind and to take advantage of technology, which could help considerably in handling crimes. The open tender process has been completed. We have called for advanced technology CCTV cameras and the installation work will begin in the next two weeks,” police commissioner MB Boralingaiah said.
