A man impersonating a PSI defrauds 50 women; arrested by Belagavi CEN

A man has been arrested in Karnataka’s Belagavi over charges of impersonating a Police Sub-Inspector (PSI), assuming a false identity & duping 50 women. The imposter, Vijaya Kumar Barali, was arrested by Belagavi Cyber Economic and Narcotics Crime (CEN) police, officials said Friday.

The complainants alleged that Kumar, 28, cheated them of Rs 4 lakh

Kumar set up an Instagram account pretending to be PSI Anil Kumar Kambar of the Nippani Rural Police Station.

Through this account, Kumar lured women and engaged in conversations. Kumar, then, used to promise to marry the women. The Instagram account (@kspas_officially_96) had over lakh followers before it was taken down from the social media platform.

According to the police, Kumar made false promises of marriage to four women from Hassan, Bengaluru, Vijayapura and Kollapura.

Kumar’s elaborate plan started to collapse when one of the women insisted on video-calling him. When Kumar rejected the requests repeatedly, the woman filed a complaint with the Belagavi Superintendent of Police.

In another twist, the woman also sent a letter expressing her love, a rose, chocolate and a watch, which reached the actual PSI, Kambar.

After finding out that his identity was stolen, the PSI filed a police complaint. Following investigations, the police zeroed in on Kumar and arrested him.

Further investigations were on, police said.
