Belagavi Residents Urge Government to Expand Rail Network Across District

Belagavi, the largest district in the state, has railway access in only seven of its 15 taluks. Residents are urging the government to extend railway services, citing benefits for commuting and local economies. The district has a historic British-era railway line connecting North India, with no expansions since the Londa-Belagavi line opened in 1887.

South Western Railway officials note growing demand for a new railway network, with surveys for routes like Savadatti to Belagavi complete, and land acquisition for projects like Belagavi to Dharwad via Kittur ongoing. The Belagavi-Kolhapur direct route is also gaining traction due to its shorter distance. Rajya Sabha member Iranna Kadadi stated efforts are underway to improve Belagavi’s railway connectivity, including station development, double tracking, and electrification, with a focus on timely project completion.
