Belagavi’s Pride: Colonel Sofia Qureshi, Daughter-in-law of Konnur, Briefs Media on Operation Sindoor

Colonel Sofia Qureshi, one of the two women Army officers who addressed the media about Operation Sindoor on Wednesday, has a special connection to Belagavi — she is the daughter-in-law of the district. Married to Colonel Tajuddin Bagewadi, a native of Konnur village in Gokak taluk, Sofia has become a source of pride for the region.

A native of Vadodara (Baroda), Gujarat, Colonel Sofia is currently posted in the Jammu region, while her husband, Colonel Tajuddin, is serving in the Indian Army in the Jhansi sector. The couple met during their service in Jhansi and tied the knot in 2015 in Vadodara.

Speaking to reporters at his residence in Konnur on Thursday, Ghouse Sab Bagewadi — Sofia’s father-in-law — expressed immense pride in her achievements. “It’s an honor not just for our family but for the entire village. Sofia being our daughter-in-law brings great pride to Konnur,” he said. A nameplate at his home proudly reads: Major Tajuddin Bagewadi, Indian Army.

Although the couple usually visits the village during festivals and family gatherings, Mr. Bagewadi shared that this year they couldn’t come due to official duties. Detailing their service across various regions including Jammu & Kashmir, Punjab, and Tamil Nadu, he said he has urged them to visit for Bakrid without fail this year. Colonel Tajuddin is one of his three sons, with another son serving in the Fire Brigade.

“I wasn’t even aware of the media briefing until friends and relatives started calling to congratulate me. I then called my elder son, who explained everything. It felt like winning a lottery!” Mr. Bagewadi recalled with emotion. “Since then, people have been arriving with garlands to greet me.”
