Belgaum Municipal Corporation launches a project to construct roads using waste plastic

In a new and exciting move, the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) is leading the way by using waste plastics to build roads, making it the first of its kind in the state.

Even though there is a ban on using single-use plastics, some places still sell them illegally. Also, the city doesn't look good with discarded plastics around. To solve these problems, the city is using plastic to build roads.

During a recent meeting, the Public Works Standing Committee approved the use of plastic to build a 200-meter road in front of the Belagavi City Corporation office. This first project will cost around ₹6 lakh.

The road, made with a mix of 1,700 kg of bitumen (asphalt) and 500 kg of plastic, where the plastic makes up about 8%, will be launched next week by the urban development minister and the district in-charge minister.

According to Hanmant Kaladagi from the Environment Department of the corporation, using plastic in road construction makes the roads last longer, especially during the rainy season. If this works well, the city plans to use 8% plastic in future road projects.
