Farmers Demand Sugarcane Dues and Crop Price Hike, Stop Buses by Tying Drivers' Hands in Belagavi Protest on Winter Session's First Day

Protest Disrupts Traffic for 30 Minutes
Farmers in Belagavi held a protest on Monday (December 9, 2024) in front of the Suvarna Soudha, causing a traffic jam on the Pune-Bengaluru national highway.

Farmers Take Forceful Action to Stop Buses
The farmers stopped the traffic as part of their "rasta roko" protest. They used towels to tie the hands of bus drivers and secure the steering wheels, preventing the buses from moving. The protest lasted for about 30 minutes as they asked all vehicles to stop until their protest was over.

Anger Erupts as Buses Try to Pass
When two buses tried to bypass the traffic, the farmers became angry. They chased the buses, stopped them, climbed inside, and tied the drivers' hands to the poles behind their seats. They also tied the steering wheels to steel pipes to stop the drivers from moving.

Farmers Demand Immediate Action and Reforms
The farmers were demanding the immediate payment of sugarcane dues, higher prices for sugarcane and other crops, a legal minimum support price, the removal of laws they believe harm farmers, and the start of work on river projects like Mahadayi.

Protest Ends After Heated Exchange with Police
They shouted slogans against the government and argued with the police, who asked them to clear the road. Eventually, the police managed to disperse the protesters, and the road was cleared.

Support from Various Farmer Organizations
The protest was supported by the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, Hasiru Sene, the Sugarcane Growers Association, and other farmer organizations.
