Heavy rains continues in Belagavi district, Many Roads Submerged, Electricity Poles Uprooted and authorities closed forest trekking routes and roads leading to waterfalls

For the third consecutive day, Belagavi district experienced heavy rainfall, causing flooding in certain areas like Khanapur and Belagavi taluks. As a result, several roads and barrages were submerged. To ensure safety, authorities closed forest trekking routes and roads leading to waterfalls, preventing tourists from accessing these areas.

The Khanapur-Goa Road remains closed for traffic due to flooding near the Hemmadga forest reserve. This situation has led to limited access to more than 40 villages in and around Gunji, as the Halatri stream overflowed and roads near Manturga were submerged.

The heavy rain also caused the Khanapur-Hemmadga Road to be flooded, stranding vehicles in the area. In addition to the flooding, strong winds uprooted at least 20 electricity poles in various areas like Londa, Kankumbi, Bheemgad, and Jamboti. Officials from HESCOM, Forest, and panchayat departments are working diligently amidst the challenging weather conditions to repair the power lines.

Furthermore, the water level in the Malaprabha river rose significantly, nearly submerging the Anjaneya temple in Habbanatti village. Only the flag post on the top of the temple is visible from the high road.

The situation has also affected travel plans, as Railway Police have halted trekkers from visiting Doodhsagar waterfalls on the Karnataka-Goa border. Due to flooding, the waterfalls are now only accessible by rail, and Goa Police have blocked entry from the other side of the border.

During this heavy rainfall, Kankumbi, the birthplace of the Malaprabha and the Mahadayi rivers, recorded the highest rainfall at 235 mm. Other areas like MK Hubli received 180 mm, Londa had 150 mm, and Belagavi saw 50 mm of rainfall.

Despite these recent showers, Belagavi district, which lies on the borders of the Western Ghats, continues to experience a scarcity of rainfall overall.
