Nine taluks in Belagavi face water crisis Despite monsoon

The monsoon has been going on for almost 10 days in Belagavi district, but the water levels in reservoirs have not improved yet. It has been cloudy with light rain for the past week, but the water situation on the ground has not changed. Many villages and urban areas are relying on water tankers for their water needs.


Around 75 village councils and nine urban areas are facing a severe shortage of water and depend mostly on water tankers provided by the local government. Belagavi district is the most affected in the region, which includes seven other districts.


In the 40 wards of the nine urban areas in Belagavi district, 26 tankers are making an average of 53 trips every day to supply water.
To meet the water needs of the 75 village councils in Belagavi district, a total of 88 tankers are being used, making 270 trips per day. Additionally, borewell water is being provided to 45 villages using 57 private borewells.


Among the nine areas in Belagavi district facing acute water shortage, Athani is the most affected with 18 village councils. Khanapur and Raibag have 15 village councils each, followed by 12 in Belagavi, 6 in Nippani, 4 in Chikodi, 3 in Gokak, and 1 each in Mudalagi and Ramdurg.


The district minister, Satish Jarkiholi, mentioned that the meteorology department has predicted good rainfall for the next 10 days. He expressed hope that the current water problem will be resolved within a week or two.
