Lorry Driver Seriously Injured in Alleged Assault in Belagavi
A 36-year-old lorry driver was seriously injured in an alleged assault near the Shankaranand statue on Club Road in Belagavi on Tuesday.
The injured has been identified as Ayaz Savanur, a resident of Rukmini Nagar. According to preliminary information, around eight people are suspected to be involved in the attack. The exact reason for the assault is yet to be confirmed by the police.
Sources said the incident may have occurred after a minor road accident involving the lorry and a car near Hindalga. It is alleged that the lorry did not stop after the collision, following which the car occupants chased the vehicle, overtook it, and confronted the driver near Club Road.
During the confrontation, Ayaz Savanur was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon, causing injuries to his thigh, ear, back, and head. The lorry’s window panes were also reportedly damaged due to stone pelting.
The injured driver was shifted to a private hospital and is currently undergoing treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
Police personnel from Belagavi Camp Police Station, along with a forensic team, visited the spot and conducted an inspection. A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway.
